After Braveheart |
On RTE One tonight at 10:15pm, part one of a ‘docudrama’
shot on location at Lough Boora Parklands in Offaly last year will make its
first appearance on Irish television. The airing of the show was delayed until
now to coincide with the 700th anniversary of the Bruce Invasion of
Ireland which occurs this year.
The Bruce Invasion refers to a three-year military campaign
undertaken by Edward Bruce, brother of the Scottish king Robert Bruce, in
Ireland in the year 1315. Bruce's main reason for invading Ireland was to
create a second front in Scotland’s ongoing war against Norman England. He
thought a conflict in Ireland would drag English forces away from the island of
Great Britain, as well as draining the English of money and materials. At the
time of filming, producer of After Braveheart, Stephen Rooke, remarked: “Not
many people know that the Scots once invaded Ireland, and even fewer are aware
that the last high king of Ireland was a Scotsman.”
The series was made for RTÉ, BBC Northern Ireland, and BBC
Scotland under a joint initiative launched in 2012 to fund television shows of
interest to viewers in all three countries. The production team travelled to
the beautiful surrounds of Lough Boora Parklands here in Offaly to shoot the
dramatised segments of the show. After Braveheart combines a documentary
narrated by notable actor Brian Cox of Bourne Supremacy fame, with fully acted
drama segments carried out by an impressive cast. Some of the stars include:
Clive Russell from Game Of Thrones, Stuart McKinnon, and Douglas Russell.

Tile Films, the film company involved, released a statement
about After Braveheart last year: “Atmospheric dramatic sequences and visceral
battle scenes are combined with the stunning location and innovative special
effects to bring the harsh and violent medieval world to life. This is a story
of two Celtic nations, a shared heritage and a forgotten war that could have
changed the course of history,” it read.
Tune in to RTE One tonight at 10:15pm to discover these
events, and catch a glimpse of the beautiful setting in Co. Offaly
